Something to do with Prime…

So, this week, my good friend, most regular viewer, and streamer himself, got offered Twitch Affiliate status, and accepted. You should go follow Frici, he’s awesome.

Another friend got offered, but hasn’t decided whether to accept or not yet. This got me thinking about a few things.

A lot of people make a big thing about their first subscriber, and justifiably so. Having someone offer up their money to you just because they think you deserve it. However, in some ways, I think that special feeling has been diminished.

To catch people up then. Up until about a year ago, you could only subscribe to a partnered channel, for at least $4.99 a month of actual real money. Then they introduced Twitch Prime, and everyone who was already an Amazon Prime member got a free sub. From what I’m told, a lot of partners saw a whole lot more subs rolling in then through Prime. Which is good, don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying any of this is a bad thing, but I do think that if your subs sub with Prime, it’s a little less special, simply by dilution.

To everyone who subs to me with Prime (all my subs), it’s not that you’re not appreciated, it really really isn’t. You guys are all awesome. Please keep subbing. Please?

Anyway, Affiliate subs happened, and suddenly there were many more people to sub to. And this is awesome. I personally subscribe to 5 channels, including my Prime sub. Only one is a partner. (PS: All of this is my own money, not anything I make out of streaming.)

I used to use Gamewisp for subscriptions. I remember my first sub there. They were someone who subbed the first time they were in the channel, simply because they liked to do that for people for a while. Given that I was able to get Hellblade from what my Gamewisp subs gave, I’m certainly not complaining. But I feel that it would have been more significant if it had been someone who had been in the channel a while, that I knew.

When Affiliates got subs, someone who’s been in my community for a long time subbed straight away. It wasn’t a surprise, and I was nevertheless grateful.

It just seems to me that maybe Prime subs have cheapened that very special feeling a little. Maybe I’m just a greedy bitter SOAB.

I would, however, like to say a massive thank-you to my subs, the majority of which use Prime. I should also add that for affiliates, Prime subs are better, because we don’t have to pay any payment processing charges on Prime subs. You guys are all awesome. On that note, all my survivors subscribers can now use my first channel emote on all Twitch channels, and on my Discord server! If you have Discord Nitro, you can use it globally. Just use darkin1Auro, or :darkin1Auro: on Discord, and you’ll see the below horror appear. Hopefully we’ll be able to change our prefix at some point, but for now, that’s the code.

Feel free to let me know what your thoughts are, please don’t hate me, please don’t unsubscribe just because of this post. 😀

Unfortunately, I can’t afford to sub to multiple channels. Having Amazon Prime at least lets me support a streamer I enjoy. The Prime subs may have cheapened the feeling for streamers but for me, it was a way to finally help out.
